Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional body horror, but inside Together lies a profound meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He dreads the idea of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
