Time is right to change Man Utd's tactical setup - Amorim states.

Man Utd skipper Bruno Fernandes was among seven first-team stars to miss the holiday period win against Newcastle United.

Head coach Ruben Amorim argues that switching Man Utd's formation due to external pressure would have meant "his demise" for him.

For the first time against Newcastle United, Amorim moved away from his customary three-at-the-back formation with wing-backs and chose to field an standard four-man defense shielded by two central midfielders.

Amorim acknowledged this ultimately functioned as a six-man defensive block in the closing phase as his side dug in for a victory - securing only their second-ever shutout of the campaign.

Despite he once famously remarked that even the Pope could force him to change his approach, Amorim asserts the capacity to experiment with different formations has consistently been part of his long-term vision.

However, he emphasizes he could solely make the switch when his team were doing well enough - otherwise it would look as if he was bowing to external noise.

"When I came here last season, I realized perhaps I didn't possess the players to play well in a back three, but it was the commencement of a project," he commented.

"Our aim was to forge an philosophy. Currently is a distinct time. We lack a full complement of players, and we need adjust, so they see why we are changing.

"It is not because of the demands of journalists, or the fans.

"Whenever the press talk about changing the system all the time, I cannot change because the squad will believe I'm altering things because of you and I feel that is the downfall for the manager.

"Once we are playing well in our preferred setup, then is the right time to change.

"This will help us become a better side because when our full complement of players return, we are not intending to play with three defenders exclusively."

Squad Challenges Continue

Having just two wins in their last eight outings before defeating Newcastle, it is debatable whether Amorim is correct to say his team have been in good form.

He is, though, working with a severely stretched squad, with multiple senior players already unavailable for the forthcoming home game against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That total will grow if playmaker Mason Mount fails to recover the knock that led to his exit from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is a key name who will miss the Wolves clash, even though he is understood to be pressing his manager to let him to return after his muscle problem.

"Fernandes is already telling me he has to practice," said Amorim. "But there is no chance he is going to feature against Wolves. No chance. You can quote me on that."

Fernandes' Role Is Unwavering

Nevertheless, the 31-year-old will almost certainly still be a prominent presence, as whereas most injured players watch matches from the stands, Fernandes was observed monitoring the warm-ups from the mouth of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim expects his captain to carry on offering guidance.

"He is a leader," he stated. "He must not be that guy that when he is absent, he's not talking and speaking. He's constantly speaking. That's why he's the captain.

"There are negative aspects at times - the way he moves his arms - but he has a multitude of good things. Even after he finishes treatment, he heads to watch the rest of the squad training. There are a many things you don't see.

"I'm not sure if he desires my position or not, but he's a leader. He is a leader."

Recovery Timeline for Injured Personnel

Although the precise timeline for Fernandes' return - and that of other injured stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is unknown, before the conclusion of January, United will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international competition.
