🔗 Share this article From Praise to Fury: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein File Disclosure is Mixed. Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner. Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter outlining the censorship process. Concerns Prompted by Redactions While Trump's identity and image are visible in some of the documents, the widespread redactions raise serious concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater transparency. “The public are furious and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene. Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this document release grossly fails to adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued. Some Rightwing Figures Rally Behind the Release However, some rightwing commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly behind the administration. The release—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely redacted, and many of the men shown in photographs have their faces obscured. But a few do not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, enabled some conservative voices to go on the offensive. “This is quite ironic how the Democrats wrongly accused Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer. “New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.” Clinton Campaign Releases Statement Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing these documents for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment. “This is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and conceal forever. So they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added. Broader Conservative Commentary Remains Subdued However, broader discourse on the political right was comparatively muted following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to pass a bill mandating the files' release. The commentator, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy folders of files that contained little previously unseen data.
