European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
