Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages leading to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "They were part of numerous UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our security, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
